Research Associate in Phenomenology of Particle Physics and Cosmology

Salary range: £36,070 - £43,350 per annum
Fixed Term: up to two years with the possibility of extension, available from 1st October 2017
We are seeking a dynamic researcher to join us to work on Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) global fits and inflationary and vacuum stability consequences. The researcher will work closely with Drs Pat Scott and Roberto Trotta and Prof Arttu Rajantie on: a) developing techniques for employing symbolic QFT methods for initiating BSM global fits, b) performing novel phenomenological analyses with the Global and Modular BSM Inference Tool (GAMBIT), including of models for inflation, and c) investigating inflationary and vacuum stability implications of different BSM models.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching activities up to approximately half a day per week during the academic year, as appropriate.
A PhD, or equivalent level of professional qualifications/experience, in theoretical physics with a strong background in phenomenology of particle physics and/or the early Universe, and significant coding experience in C++ and Python, are all essential. Experience working with Beyond the Standard Model global fits, experience in applied statistical methods, inflationary model-building, working with the GAMBIT codebase and/or widely-used symbolic QFT tools (SARAH, MadGraph, CalcHEP, FeynRules, etc), and experience with symbolic computational methods in quantum field theory would be advantageous.
You must have strong communication skills, coupled with an ability to write and speak clearly and succinctly for scientific audiences. You should also exhibit an enthusiastic approach to research, a flexible attitude to work, open-mindedness and the ability to effectively mix leadership and co-operation. Applicants should also demonstrate an ability to develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods, to work independently and show initiative, and possess a creative approach to problem solving.
This position will be held jointly between the and Astrophysics Group and Theoretical Physics Group within the Fundamental Physics Section of the Department of Physics, located in the Blackett Laboratory. It is initially available for up to two years, but may be extended for a third, pending funding availability.
