Description:
Postdoctoral Researcher in the Dark Matter, Neutrinos and Particle Astrophysics group
(Project 8 Neutrino Mass Experiment)
Penn State University
The Department of Physics at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking to fill one or more Postdoctoral Researcher positions in the area of Particle Astrophysics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in research programs within the Dark Matter, Neutrinos and Particle Astrophysics group, led by Professors Luiz de Viveiros and Carmen Carmona. The successful candidate will work on the Project 8 experiment and on detector R&D.;
The Project 8 experiment seeks to determine the neutrino mass via the precise measurement of the electron energy in beta decays. We have developed and demonstrated the viability of a novel technique called Cyclotron Radiation Emission Spectroscopy (CRES), which allows single electron detection and characterization through the measurement of cyclotron radiation emitted by magnetically-trapped electrons produced by a gaseous radioactive source. We are currently working on the first CRES measurement using a tritium source, and the design of a large scale detector aimed at measuring the neutrino mass. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in R&D; work in the Penn State laboratory, participate in the design and construction of the next phase of the Project 8 experiment, with a focus on the signal acquisition and reconstruction techniques required for a large tritium detector, as well as in the analysis of existing and future science data.
Requirements include a Ph.D. in Physics, and the ideal candidate should have experience with experimental particle astrophysics, nuclear physics, particle physics or a related field. Applications must be submitted electronically at https://psu.jobs/job/69065 and include a cover letter, CV and statement of research interests. Applicants should arrange for three reference letters to be submitted to physicsapply@psu.edu indicating the appropriate job number in the subject line. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of re-funding. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a suitable candidate is found.
